WoW Forever Skinning guide

Camp objects, rank training, scarce Pristine leathers, and how to level skinning while you quest.

Checked 7 facts, 0 from Blizzard

Skinning's beta changes center on camps and scarce leather: the client files add Tanning, a Camp Chair, a Field Guide, and a Trapper's Workbench, plus Pristine and Fel leathers that new recipes use.

Quick answer

Skinning still caps at 300 in the beta files, with ranks trained at 50, 125 and 200. Forever adds three camp objects, a starter-quest manual, and Scarce Pristine leathers that 80 Leatherworking recipes use.

What changed in Forever

The beta client data (build 1.60.1.70009) records 12 live Skinning rows. Eight are new, four match the Classic client rows, and none are marked changed or retired. The new rows are four additional rank spells, Tanning, and three camp crafts. These are reported database entries, not proof of every server-side learning source or drop location.Source: Forever Skinning spell list

ChangeClassic Era dataForever beta data
Skill rowsFour rank spells12 live rows: 8 new, 4 same
Camp supportNo camp recipesTanning and three camp crafts
Changed or retiredFour matching rank rows0 changed, 0 retired

The new rank entries repeat the four familiar ranks with new spell IDs. Their descriptions give potential Skinning skill values of 75, 150, 225, and 300.

The beta client files show those rank values, but do not ship the table that sets maximum skill, so the 300 cap is read from the rank descriptions and recipe thresholds.Source: Forever Skinning ranks

Trainers and ranks

The Forever database lists these rank requirements and training costs:

RankTrain at skillCost
ApprenticeNo Skinning gate listed10 copper
Journeyman505 silver
Expert12550 silver
Artisan2005 gold

The Forever trainer list includes two Skinning trainers on Zephras Isle, Ishlee Breezewhisper and Mendalass Tattermend. City trainers include Maris Granger in Stormwind, Balthus Stoneflayer in Ironforge, Thuwd in Orgrimmar, and Mooranta in Thunder Bluff. These trainer names and locations are reported in Wowhead's Forever database.Source: Skinning rank spell and trainers

The rank records list profession-skill requirements but do not state character-level gates. The 300 cap is inferred: the rank descriptions reach potential skill 300, while the beta client files do not ship the maximum-skill table itself.Source: Skinning ranks

Leveling Skinning 1-300

Skinning is a gathering profession: skill rises by skinning corpses, not by crafting, so there is no recipe route. Three Forever changes affect the start:

  • Early manual: a level 3-4 quest offers a Skinning manual
  • Junior trainers: six starting zones have a Junior Skinning Trainer
  • Elwynn fix: Helene Peltskinner now teaches during her quest

Forever has not published corpse skill thresholds, so the leveling method below is the Classic baseline. Wowhead's Classic guide says to skin whenever you can, start with the lower-level mobs in a zone, and move up as skill rises.Source: Wowhead Classic Skinning guide

Ruined Leather Scraps6-15
Light Leather6-17
Light Hide11-25

Train Journeyman at 50, Expert at 125, and Artisan at 200, before each rank's cap. You need a Skinning Knife in your bags, a corpse must be fully looted before you can skin it, and a red "Skinnable" tooltip means the mob is above your skill (Classic rules).

Skin as you follow a leveling route or the RestedXP guide rather than detouring; the Classic guide gives the same advice.

Scarce leather in Forever

The beta client adds leathers that do not exist in Classic Era: Pristine Leather (item level 25), Pristine Hide (45), Pristine Scale (60), Fel Hide and Fel Leather (both 60). Beta recipe counts show who wants them:

MaterialLive Forever recipes using it
Pristine Leather80 Leatherworking, 30 Blacksmithing, 16 Tailoring
Pristine Hide43 Leatherworking, 2 Tailoring, 1 Engineering
Pristine Scale12 Leatherworking, 2 Tailoring, 2 Engineering

Key recipes

The new entries are camp utilities, not a way to raise Skinning. Tanning has no reagents; its description says it "Allows the skinner to add features to a wilderness camp."

RecipeSkillReagents or recipe item
Camp Chair203 Light Leather, 2 Simple Wood
Field Guide140Blueprint; 3 Medium Leather, 2 Slimy Murloc Scale, 1 Fine Thread
Trapper's Workbench300Blueprint; 2 Simple Wood, 4 Heavy Leather, 1 Iron Bar

The Camp Chair entry is learned at skill 20 through a quest or trainer; its listed trainer cost is 100 copper. The Field Guide uses Blueprint: Field Guide, with a 140 skill requirement, and the Trapper's Workbench uses Blueprint: Trapper's Workbench, with a 300 skill requirement. Neither blueprint has a published source.

Camp objects

At level 60, the Skinning camp items provide the following reported effects:

ObjectSkillEffect at level 60
Camp Chair202% critical strike with spells and attacks
Field Guide140Track Beasts, plus the Camp Chair effect
Trapper's Workbench300Contains 1 trap, plus the Camp Chair effect

The Camp Chair's critical strike effect is exclusive with Moonkin Aura. All three items require a nearby Campfire, and all camping features share a 1-hour cooldown. The Field Guide can replace the Camp Chair; the Workbench can also replace the Chair.Source: Camping overview

There is a reported craft-yield conflict. The beta client recipe rows list one item made per craft, while Wowhead's Camping overview says crafts provide two items that are consumed on use. Those sources disagree, so the yield is unresolved in this evidence set.Source: Camping overview

Pairing and gold

The beta Skinning rank text describes pelts and furs for use in Leatherworking. In Classic, Wowhead calls Leatherworking the common pairing because it uses the most skins and hides; it also lists Tailoring and Blacksmithing as professions that use skins.

In Classic, Wowhead says leather and scales can be sold through the Auction House and describes Skinning as a possible money-making profession. The reviewed Forever evidence has no Skinning sale prices or demand data, so that is not a Forever gold estimate.Source: Classic Skinning guide

Blizzard's planned Legacy challenges award tradeskill points at 150, 225, and 300 for each non-gathering primary profession. The article does not name Skinning; the Classic guide classifies it as gathering, so a Skinning-specific Legacy reward is not explicitly promised.Source: Legacy system article; Classic Skinning guide
