"Systems" is the word this site uses for the rules that sit underneath every character in World of Warcraft: Forever: which ruleset your world runs on, what your account keeps between characters, what the world will and will not do for you, and which client options you can turn on or off. None of it is class or zone detail. If you want that, the full guide index lists every page, the start-here path for new players puts access and character choice in order, and Forever beside Classic, Retail, and Turtle WoW sets the product boundaries.

Four things decide how a Forever character plays. You pick a ruleset when you create the character. You accumulate account-wide progression that follows every alt. You live with world rules Blizzard has deliberately left in their Classic state. And you set client options that change what you see without changing what you fight.

The four confirmed pillars

Rulesets. Blizzard's realmless announcement says players choose PvP, Normal, RP, or Hardcore rules and share a world with everyone on the same rules. The Deep Dive Panel Recap describes each ruleset as its own large ecosystem rather than one merged realm, which is why cross-ruleset grouping rules matter before you pick.

Account-wide progression. Legacy Points, perks, and appearance collections are pooled across characters and rulesets. Hardcore is the single documented exception: progress leaves Hardcore when a dead character transfers out, but outside progress cannot enter.

World rules held in place. The What's Next Panel Recap states the design philosophy in one sentence:

You'll feel that philosophy throughout the world: no flying mounts, no level scaling, and a continued focus on challenge, preparation, communication, and cooperation.

That sentence covers travel, zone difficulty, and the reason the levelling route still follows zone level ranges.

Client options. The same recap groups the visual and input choices together:

Player choice also carries through opt-in Transmog, modern and Classic visual presets, High-Definition (HD) and Standard-Definition (SD) character-model options, restored Classic animations for HD character models, and official gamepad support for players who prefer to play with a controller.

Both sentences were read on the live recap page on 17 September 2026.

What is reported but not written down

Two changes circulate widely and neither has a first-party document behind it.

Dungeon experience: in a 13 September interview with The Sun, Principal Designer Kris Zierhut said dungeon monster-kill XP was brought "way down" while dungeon quest XP is "much, much, much higher". That is developer design direction, not a patch note; the nine launch dungeons page carries the full quote and its caveats.

The ping wheel: creator footage shows a ping menu and a ground waypoint in the Forever client. Blizzard has published nothing about it. The ping system report treats it as observed footage only.

What is still unknown

  • Whether the 17 September beta uses the realmless structure.
  • Population limits, queues, and cross-region play per ruleset.
  • Hardcore rules, mechanics, and its exact release window.
  • Whether HD/SD is a per-character or client-wide setting.
  • Gamepad remapping, accessibility options, and console-style UI.
  • Whether controller use changes anything on the published requirements.
  • Any group finder. No source announces one, so this site does not list one.

The update schedule is where dated answers land first.
