A Practical Beginner Choice
Pick a faction, then a class, then check the race list at the top of this page; there's no sourced "best race" ranking. Skyborne players choose either faction during character creation, and each side gets one class the other lacks. Original racials and starting zones are background, not proof Forever keeps them.
The race and class combos tool filters the same table by race, class or faction, and the tools page lists the site's other planners.
Each race page quotes Blizzard's racial text and dates the September 24 beta changes: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Orc, Forsaken, Tauren, Troll, and Skyborne.
Confirmed, Planned, and Unknown
The six new pairings and Skyborne are confirmed; the spring combinations are unverified, and sources conflict on the race total.
- Blizzard's race and class tables list six new pairings. Confirmed
- Battle.net product page names Dwarf Shaman and Forsaken Paladin. Confirmed
- Deleted roadmap image listed two unnamed spring class/race combinations. Unverified
- Race total: Blizzard prints none; reports conflict. Unverified conflict
Still open: racial details not specified in the cited notes, customizations, faction changes, plus the unresolved spring combinations. Some cooldowns are now explicitly listed in the October 15 notes.
Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says: "The team is also adding six new class-and-race combinations to explore: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin, with more planned for future updates."Blizzard: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap, checked Sep 15, 2026.
The Battle.net product page also calls Skyborne a playable elven race from Zephras Isle. Starting on Zephras Isle requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher.
The deleted image was the first roadmap image; Blizzard's current 2026 to 2027 roadmap graphic does not list those two combinations.
Blizzard's tables list nine races, the eight originals plus Skyborne, but print no total number. PC Gamer and CNET report one new race, while MeriStation reports two.
Also open: the values Blizzard's one-line racial text leaves out, and whether the two spring combinations from the deleted roadmap image are still planned.
What Each Race Can't Play
No race gets more than seven of the nine classes on offer. Blizzard's September 22 tables mark every allowed pairing with an X, and the gaps matter as much as the Xs when you pick a race.Source: Create the Hero You Want to Be in World of Warcraft: Forever, checked Sep 28, 2026.

On the Horde side:
- Orc: no Druid, Paladin or Priest.
- Tauren: no Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue or Warlock.
- Troll: no Druid or Paladin.
- Forsaken: no Druid, Hunter or Shaman.
- Windshaper Skyborne: no Mage, Paladin, Priest or Warlock.
On the Alliance side:
- Dwarf: no Druid, Mage or Warlock.
- Gnome: no Druid, Hunter, Paladin or Shaman.
- Human: no Druid or Shaman.
- Night Elf: no Mage, Paladin, Shaman or Warlock.
- High Order Skyborne: no Paladin, Priest, Shaman or Warlock.
Troll and Human can play the most classes, seven each. Tauren can play the fewest, four. Paladin is the hardest class to pair: only Human, Dwarf and Forsaken can play one.
Skyborne's Two Paths Compared
Pick the Horde at character creation for a Skyborne Shaman, or the Alliance for a Skyborne Mage. Windshaper Skyborne join the Horde and can be Shaman; High Order Skyborne join the Alliance and can be Mages. Both can be Druid, Hunter, Rogue or Warrior, "including new Skyborne druid forms created specifically for the race."Blizzard: WoW: Forever Meet the New Skyborne, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Confirmed

Both start on Zephras Isle, levels 1 to 12, and need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher. Their racials match except for one active. Windshapers get Skysight, 10% run speed, and High Order Skyborne get Read Ley Line, 100% more Health and Mana regeneration.
Customization Counts
Blizzard's Skyborne article lists ten faces for both body types, and Skyborne also have their own dance. Body Type 1 gets nine skin colors, 21 hair styles, eleven hair colors, three ear lengths, nine eye colors and four eyebrow styles, plus 13 facial hair options. Body Type 2 gets 25 hair styles, ten hair colors and six earring styles. Both add feather colors, face tattoos and two body tattoos, Zephyr and Wayfinder.
The Six New Combinations
Each new pairing lets a race play a class it couldn't in Classic Era. All six go to returning races, not Skyborne. Confirmed
Orc Mage and Troll Warlock are the Horde's two new caster pairings. For the Troll option, see the Warlock class guide. Undead Paladin gives the Horde its first Paladin, since Classic Era Paladins were Alliance only. The Paladin class guide covers how Forsaken racials fit the class.

Human Hunter and Gnome Priest add one class each to Human and Gnome; the Priest class guide covers the Gnome option. Dwarf Shaman is the first Alliance Shaman, since Shaman was Horde only in Classic Era. The Shaman class guide covers its three specs.
For leveling routes, RestedXP says its Forever guides will "account for new class and race combinations." That is a plan, and it has not said which combinations come first.
Racial Abilities That Shape Your First Weeks
Blizzard says every race gets two active and two passive racials, and its September 22 text gives numbers for some actives. The Deep Dive recap says each race has "two active abilities and two passive abilities, tuned to provide a similar amount of offensive power while preserving signature utility."Blizzard: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap, checked Sep 15, 2026.
The numbered actives include Orc Blood Fury, 10% Attack Power and Spell Power for 15 seconds; Troll Berserking, 10% casting and attack speed for 10 seconds; Night Elf Elune's Light, 10% crit for 15 seconds.
Each defensive active clears a different kind of effect: Orc Shatter Curse for Curses and Banes, Dwarf Stoneform for Bleeds, Poisons and Diseases, Human Will to Survive for stuns, and Forsaken Will of the Forsaken for Charm, Fear and Sleep. For sustain, Cannibalize restores 35% Health and Mana, and Troll Rapid Regeneration restores 50% of maximum Health over time.

Critical Bonuses and Profession Passives
The October 15 beta notes replace the three weapon-named passives: Orc gets Savage, 1% increased critical strike chance; Human gets Ruthless, 2% increased critical strike chance; Dwarf gets Earth Fury, 2% increased critical damage and healing. The note states no matching-weapon requirement for these replacements. Earth Fury changes the amount of critical damage and healing, not the chance of a critical strike.Source: Blizzard, October 15 beta notes, post 6 racial section; retained capture retrieved Oct 18, 2026. Official announcement, not a gameplay test.
Gnome Engineering Specialization's September description makes engineering devices more reliable. Dwarf Big Game Hunter and Troll Beast Slaying add 5% damage to Beasts.Blizzard: Create the Hero You Want to Be in World of Warcraft: Forever, checked Sep 25, 2026.
What Changed After September 22
Blizzard's September 24 beta notes adjusted four racials.Source: WoW Forever Beta Development Notes, updated September 24, checked Sep 28, 2026. Gnome Eureka became a 10% discount on Mana, Rage or Energy abilities for every class. That September 24 note left the earlier next-three-spells bonus unclear; the October 15 update below replaces charges with an 8-second buff. Official note wording.

Human Will to Survive got a new visual, matching Dispel Magic. Tauren Cultivation gained a player-level requirement tied to each herb. Touch of the Grave no longer breaks crowd control or triggers from spells without a damage component. The racial changes news post covers each edit. Confirmed
The October 1 beta notes changed two more racials.Source: WoW Forever Beta Development Notes, October 1, checked Oct 1, 2026. Gnome Eureka! no longer benefits periodic effects at all, and channeled spells do not count as periodics. Undead Cannibalize cannot be used if the caster is immune to Physical damage. The same build makes held and sheathed weapon sizes more consistent across all races. Confirmed for the beta.
October 15 Racial Updates
Blizzard's October 15 beta notes replace the Dwarf, Human, and Orc weapon passives as described above. They also give Blood Fury a 3-minute cooldown, War Stomp a 90-second cooldown, Cultivation a 15-minute cooldown, and Walk on Air a 90-second cooldown. Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes and reduces magic damage taken by 5%.Source: Blizzard, October 15 beta notes, post 6 racial section; retained capture retrieved Oct 18, 2026. Official announcement, not a gameplay test.
Eureka! becomes an 8-second buff with no charges, keeps its damage and ability-cost effects unchanged from the preceding beta build (the note restates no values), and now benefits Power Word: Shield. The note also reports that it cannot correctly be used in stealth or invisibility. Will of the Forsaken is unavailable under Scatter Shot. Touch of the Grave gets an unspecified proc/cooldown adjustment; the separately named Touch of the Dead gets class-specific chances and a 25-second internal cooldown. See the Forsaken guide for that unresolved name distinction. These are official beta statements, not gameplay observations.
The same update changes other racials across the roster; the October 15 beta notes carry the full list.
Races FAQ
Which race has the most class options?
Troll and Human, with seven of the nine classes each. Troll misses Druid and Paladin; Human misses Druid and Shaman.
Can I switch a Skyborne's faction after character creation?
Blizzard hasn't published a faction change process for Skyborne or the eight returning races. Treat faction as a creation-time choice until Blizzard says otherwise.
Which races can play Druid?
Tauren and Windshaper Skyborne on the Horde, Night Elf and High Order Skyborne on the Alliance. Only Paladin, with three races, has a shorter list.
Are racial ability values final?
No. Later beta updates continue to change them. Blizzard's October 15 beta notes replace three weapon-named passives, alter racial effects, and list several cooldowns. Treat these as dated beta descriptions rather than final launch values.
