Best Race for Each Class in WoW Forever
One Alliance and Horde starting pick per class, tied to a published racial effect.
The table gives a race pick for every WoW Forever class and faction. These are assessments of published racials, not Blizzard rankings or DPS simulations.
Quick answer

Best race for each class by faction
These are practical tie-breakers from Blizzard's race and class tables and racial text. “Best” means a clear fit for a stated goal, not a measured ranking. For the route after character creation, see our RestedXP leveling guide; this table is about race traits.
| Class | Alliance pick | Horde pick |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Dwarf for Stoneform's physical-damage reduction and protection from Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases. | Orc for Blood Fury's 10% Attack Power and Spell Power increase for 15 seconds. |
| Paladin | Human if you use a sword: Sword Specialization lists 2% spell and ability critical chance while one is equipped. Choose Dwarf instead if defensive utility matters more. | Forsaken is the only Horde Paladin pairing in Blizzard's published table. That is an availability answer, not a racial win. |
| Hunter | Dwarf for Big Game Hunter's 5% damage increase against Beasts. It only applies to that creature type. | Troll for Beast Slaying's matching 5% bonus against Beasts. This is a narrow leveling edge, not a general damage lead. |
| Rogue | Gnome for Expansive Mind's 5% maximum Energy and Eureka!'s updated Energy-ability discount. | Troll for Berserking's 10% attack-speed increase for 10 seconds. |
| Priest | Gnome for the Mana version of Expansive Mind and Eureka!'s updated Mana-ability discount. | Troll for Berserking's 10% casting-speed increase for 10 seconds. |
| Mage | Gnome for the same Mana-focused resource fit. | Orc for Blood Fury's 10% Spell Power increase for 15 seconds. |
| Warlock | Human for a possible Spirit and Life Tap interaction. Blizzard says Life Tap scales with Spirit, but publishes no formula, so the size of the benefit is unknown. | Orc for Blood Fury's Spell Power increase. |
| Druid | Night Elf for Elune's Light's 10% critical-chance window, with Shadowmeld as separate utility. | Tauren when short-range control matters: War Stomp stuns nearby enemies. |
| Shaman | Dwarf is the only Alliance Shaman pairing in the published table, and Stoneform adds defensive utility. | Orc for Blood Fury's Attack Power and Spell Power increase. |
The Gnome picks rely on two published effects: Expansive Mind increases maximum Mana, Rage, or Energy by 5%, and Blizzard's September 24 beta note changes Eureka! to a 10% discount on abilities using those resources. The note does not say whether the earlier next-three trigger and damage or healing bonus remain, so this guide does not count them.
Where Skyborne fits
Skyborne is also a valid option for Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid on either faction. High Order Skyborne can also be Mage, and Windshaper Skyborne can also be Shaman. Blizzard's Skyborne article gives that faction split and the race's separate racial list. These alternatives are not ranked below the table picks; the sources do not establish a universal winner. Skyborne access requires the Heroic Pack or a higher edition, according to the Battle.net product page.
When leveling or PvP changes the choice
The Beast bonuses are useful only when the target is a Beast. For other enemies, Dwarf Big Game Hunter and Troll Beast Slaying do not provide the listed bonus. If you care more about control than damage, the published text points to other choices: Human Will to Survive removes stuns, Gnome Escape Artist clears roots and snares, Night Elf Shadowmeld grants stealth while immobile, and Dwarf Stoneform handles Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases while reducing Physical damage.
Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says racial abilities are tuned for a similar amount of offensive power while keeping signature utility. That makes the table a starting point, not a promise that one race will level faster or top a damage meter. The sources list racial descriptions; they do not provide class-by-class performance tests.
Reading the table by class job
Burst racials: Orc against Troll
Blizzard's Blood Fury lasts 15 seconds and Berserking lasts 10. The beta client, build 1.60.1.70009, reports cooldowns of 2 minutes and 3 minutes, and Wowhead's Forever database shows the same for both.Source: Wowhead Forever: Blood Fury, checked Sep 28, 2026, and Wowhead Forever: Berserking, checked Sep 29, 2026.
That works out to about 15 seconds of Blood Fury per 120 and 10 seconds of Berserking per 180, so Orc gets the longer and more frequent window. This compares uptime only. Blizzard does not say a 10% Spell Power boost equals 10% casting speed.
The beta client stores Berserking's effect at 10%, matching Blizzard's text. Stoneform and Shatter Curse already show one-point gaps between the client tooltip and Wowhead's effect data, so this guide uses Blizzard's wording and calls every unpublished cooldown or value Reported.
Why Troll wins Hunter and Priest in the table
Orc is not an option for Priest, and Horde Priest offers only Troll or Forsaken. For Hunter, Orc is a real rival: Blood Fury raises Attack Power for the longer window. Troll's case is Beast Slaying plus Berserking, which Wowhead lists as covering melee, ranged, and spell speed. Our read: Orc for boss burst, Troll for beast-heavy questing. That is an assessment, not a ranking. The Troll race guide quotes the full tooltips.
Defense and control racials
Two racials answer stuns differently. Orc Hardiness shortens every stun by 20% with no button press. Human Will to Survive removes a stun on demand, and the client reports a 3 minute cooldown. The passive is safer for a Warrior who cannot always react. The button is stronger for a player who can.
Dwarf Stoneform is the class-neutral defensive button. Blizzard names the immunities and the Physical damage reduction without a number; the client reports 10% for 8 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown. Stoneform suits a Warrior or Paladin holding a pull more than a cloth caster, since most caster damage is not Physical.
Priests get race-only spells
The four racials are not the whole Priest story. Blizzard's September 24 notes name Gnome Contingency Plan and Confounding Flash, Night Elf Starshards, and Undead Dark Sacrifice. Trolls also keep Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard in the beta client, which Blizzard's articles do not mention (Reported). Wowhead lists Confounding Flash at level 10 and Contingency Plan at level 20.Source: Wowhead Forever: Contingency Plan and Confounding Flash, checked Sep 28, 2026.
The table picks Gnome and Troll for the resource and speed racials. Compare the spell lists on the Priest class guide and the Gnome race guide before you commit, since the spells are tuned build by build.
Which classes have a real choice
Narrow rosters decide the pick for you
Some classes have so few races that the table is mostly an availability answer. From Blizzard's September 22 tables:
- Paladin: Human or Dwarf on Alliance, Forsaken only on Horde.
- Shaman: Dwarf only on Alliance.
- Druid: Night Elf or High Order on Alliance.
- Druid: Tauren or Windshaper on Horde.
- Priest: Troll or Forsaken on Horde.
Warrior is open to every race on both factions, so it is the class where racial fit matters most.
Close rivals behind the table's pick
Horde Shaman is also open to Tauren, Troll, and Windshaper Skyborne. Tauren Endurance raises total Health by 5% and Hit Chance by 1%, and War Stomp stuns for 2 seconds. Horde Warlock is open to Troll and Forsaken as well as Orc, and Troll Warlock is one of the six new pairings.
On Alliance, Mage is open to Human and High Order Skyborne besides Gnome. Human's The Human Spirit adds 5% Spirit. Whether that beats Gnome's 5% resource bonus depends on how much Spirit your class uses, and Blizzard publishes no Mage formula.
Forsaken Paladin and the Touch of the Grave rules
Forsaken Paladin is the only Horde route to the class, so the racials matter less than the choice to play it. Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says Cannibalize now restores Mana as well as Health, and names Paladins among the mana classes it helps.
The September 24 notes narrow Touch of the Grave: it no longer breaks crowd control or triggers from spells with no damage component. Blizzard's developer note says Shadow Word: Pain activates it on cast but not on periodic damage. See the Forsaken race guide.
Leveling, professions, and route addons
Beasts, herbs, and other situational bonuses
Beast Slaying and Big Game Hunter pay off only against Beasts. Tauren Cultivation is also situational: the September 24 notes require a player level equal to the herb's picking skill divided by 5, and herbs above 300 skill unlock at player level 60. That is confirmed for the beta build and not final. If you plan to gather, the Herbalism guide covers the profession side.
Gnome Engineering Specialization says only "More reliable engineering devices," with no numbers. Treat it as flavor unless you plan to level Engineering.
Pairing a race with a leveling route
A race pick does not change which route you follow. RestedXP sells a WoW Forever guide that is still being built, and Zygor Guides has announced Forever guides for launch.Source: Zygor's Forever announcement, checked Sep 28, 2026. The sources checked show no race-specific route from either vendor or from Blizzard. The leveling guide covers the level 60 cap and Classic zone baselines.
What could change before launch
Blizzard's September 24 notes already touched four racials from its September 22 article, one of them only visually. Eureka! is the open case: the note gives a 10% discount on Mana, Rage, or Energy abilities on every class and does not say what happened to the earlier damage bonus. Wowhead News reported the Gnome racial as heavily nerfed in that build.Source: Wowhead News: Gnome Racial Heavily Nerfed in Latest WoW: Forever Beta Build, checked Sep 29, 2026.
Before you spend hours on a character, recheck the racials guide for changed tooltips and use the race and class combos tool to confirm the pairing exists.
Frequently asked questions FAQ
What is the single best race in WoW Forever?
There is no single pick in this guide. Use the class row for your faction, then decide whether its damage, resource, defensive, or control effect fits how you play. Blizzard's cited sources do not give a universal ranking.
What is the best Horde race for Paladin?
Forsaken is the only Horde Paladin pairing in Blizzard's September 22 table. That makes it the available Horde choice in the source, not proof that its racials outperform another race.
Are the race recommendations good for endgame too?
They are not endgame rankings. The source set gives racial descriptions and design intent, not class-specific simulations or damage results. Recheck the beta notes and current racial page if Blizzard changes a tooltip.
Can Skyborne be the best race for a class?
Yes, it can be a personal pick for any class listed for its faction. Skyborne access requires the Heroic Pack or higher; compare its faction-specific traits on the Skyborne guide.
