WoW Forever quality-of-life changes

Every announced convenience change, what it does for you, and how sure we are it ships.

Checked 5 facts, 2 from Blizzard

Blizzard says every quality-of-life choice can shape how players meet and play together, so Forever adds convenience in specific places and holds back in others. This checklist covers each announced change, what it means in play, and where the line currently sits.

Quick answer

Announced changes include a Classic or enhanced mode, SD and HD models, gamepad support, a Cooldown Manager and damage meter, opt-in transmog, campfires, and Legacy perks for travel.

The mode choice comes from the developer Q&A at 01:08:00, which also says the SD and HD switch lives in graphics settings. The Deep Dive recap separately confirms Classic Mode disables transmog on entry. Full detail: SD and HD models and gamepad support.

To test the Cooldown Manager, open Options and find it under Gameplay Enhancement. The beta notes say it supports Druid, Mage, Priest, Warrior, and Warlock so far, and does not yet handle spell ranks. Its known issues include untracked Healthstone and pet cooldowns, untracked weapon enhancements such as rogue poisons, and Priests tracking every spell by default.

Blizzard asks testers which spells they want tracked by default, so expect the list to change before launch. The developers want players to feel they can "jump in and play" without downloading addons, per the Q&A at 01:22:00. The addon guide covers the API choice.

Gamepad details in the beta

  • Druid, Hunter, Warlock, Paladin, Warrior flyouts
  • Compact Action Bar option
  • Fixed Party Targeting on the directional pad
  • Swappable friendly and hostile target sides
  • Controller navigation at character select
  • Interact with quest-starting items on gamepad

The last two come from the September 22 client update (confirmed); the rest from the September 24 notes. The September 24 build also fixed edit mode layouts under the gamepad UI, updated map and quest log bindings, and added hover on map pins.

Transmog and appearances

Transmog is opt-in. Visit a transmogrifier in certain cities to set outfits or disable the system, per the Deep Dive recap (confirmed). Three rules reduce friction:

  • Shared dungeon appearances: Bind-on-pickup Uncommon and Rare drops grant looks to all eligible looters
  • Poor and Common items: Appearance granted on loot, no binding needed
  • Collecting while disabled: Appearances still collect with transmog off

The shared-appearance rule means nobody has to roll against an upgrade just to collect its look. Helm and cloak hiding still works with transmog off, and you still see other players' hidden slots. Epic raid drops grant their look only to the winner, and item-type rules still apply: plate to plate, cloth to cloth. See the transmog guide.

Leveling, travel, and recovery

ChangeEvidenceWhat it means for you
Basic CampfireConfirmedRest, repair, buy, craft, and take one-hour buffs outdoors
Campfire buffs while busyConfirmed in betaSit, lie down, or kneel; buff, cast, and craft while waiting
Burning Crusade-style mount costPlannedCost moves into riding training; you get a mount
Legacy: Frequent FlierConfirmedCheaper, faster flight paths
Legacy: TalentedConfirmedTalent points up to 5 levels early
Legacy: The Quick and the DeadConfirmedFaster corpse runs and free rebuffs after a wipe
Legacy: Reagent EconomyConfirmedNo purchasable reagents for class abilities
Legacy: Reinforce and Field MedicineConfirmedLess death durability loss; shorter bandage lockout

Campfire and mount details come from the Deep Dive recap; perks from Blizzard's Legacy article. Each character spends up to 16 Legacy points at launch, so you pick a few of these, not all.

The beta also charges 1 silver to respec if you have not reset recently, but Blizzard calls that "temporary for the Beta only." More on camping and Legacy.

Social and account

  • Rulesets instead of realms: Choose Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, or later Hardcore, and play with that whole ruleset. See realmless.
  • Two-part names: Every character needs a first name and surname, unique across the region, per the Q&A at 01:13:30.
  • Language preference: Set it under Options, System, Languages and Social. It is account-wide with a 24-hour change cooldown, per Blizzard's ruleset article (confirmed).
  • Shared auction house: The Q&A says an auction house spans the whole ruleset, including oceanic and US players (01:13:00, planned).
  • Mail fix: The beta notes fixed mail that ignored surnames.
  • Pings: Creator footage shows a radial ping menu and ground markers. Blizzard has not documented it. See our ping report.

What Forever holds back

Blizzard's pillars treat some modern conveniences as costs. These are announced limits:

No source announces an automated dungeon finder, meeting-stone summons, a built-in quest helper beyond quest tracking, or bank and bag changes (not announced). The group finder page tracks the queue question.

Quality-of-life FAQ

Can I turn off the modern features?

Mostly. Classic Mode disables quest tracking and transmog, SD models restore the original look, and the Cooldown Manager starts off. Blizzard has not said whether pings can be turned off.

Does WoW Forever have a built-in damage meter?

Developers say it does, alongside the Cooldown Manager. The beta notes so far document only the Cooldown Manager.

Is there a dungeon finder?

Not announced. Rulesets make more players available, but Blizzard has not described a queue.
