WoW Forever Transmog Guide
Transmog is opt-in at city transmogrifiers, and switching it off shows everyone in their real gear. Appearances keep unlocking while it's off, so staying in the clown suit costs you nothing.

What Blizzard Has Confirmed
In the Deep Dive Panel Recap, Blizzard outlines these announced transmogrification mechanics for WoW: Forever:
- City transmogrifiers: create and save outfits, or turn transmog off.
- Opt-out visibility rules: transmog off shows only equipped gear.
- Continuous appearance collection: you keep collecting even with transmog off.
- Dungeon group loot sharing: all eligible looters get the appearance.
- Raid epic binding rule: only the bound player gets it.
- Poor and Common items: unlock on loot, no binding needed.
- Armor and level restrictions: matching armor, level limits until 60.
- Hidden helm and cloak preservation: hiding works with transmog off.
- Account-wide collections: shared across characters and rulesets, except Hardcore.
- Preset defaults: the Classic preset starts with transmog off.
You can visit a transmogrifier NPC in certain cities to create and save transmogrified outfits, or to turn the feature off entirely. Disabling transmog means you see only the gear other players actually have equipped. If you choose Classic Mode when you first launch the game, transmog is disabled automatically when you enter the world. Our optional transmog toggle report covers the announcement itself.
You keep adding new appearances to your collection as you get gear, even while transmog display is disabled. When a bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare item drops in a dungeon, its appearance is granted to all eligible looters when the item is looted. If you need it as an upgrade, you don't have to compete against group members rolling purely for an appearance unlock. The dungeon roster and level brackets cover where those drops come from.
For epic raid drops, the appearance is granted on acquisition only to the player the item binds to. That preserves the prestige of raid accomplishments and leaves loot distribution with raid groups. The raid list and published group sizes cover the announced raids. Poor (gray) and Common (white) quality items unlock their appearance the moment you loot them, with no need to bind them to your character.
Transmogrification requires matching armor types (cloth chest to cloth chest, plate to plate). Low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances until level 60, when level restrictions are removed for all collected valid appearances. Cosmetic-only items remain rare exceptions. The published leveling route anchors cover the climb to that cap, and the nine-class Classic roster covers which races and roles each class has.
Turning the system off doesn't stop you from configuring your own display options, such as hiding your helm or cloak. With transmog turned off, you still see other players' hidden helm and cloak states. Appearance collections are shared across characters and rulesets, with Hardcore as an isolated exception: Hardcore progress flows out on transfer, but outside progress can't enter Hardcore.
The Deep Dive slide starts the Classic preset with transmog off and standard-definition characters, so the HD and SD model options decide what you see before you ever visit a transmogrifier.

How to Turn Transmog Off, or Back On
Two Ways to Opt Out
On the September 13 Deep Dive stream, a developer described two ways to opt out. The first is "simply speaking to an NPC and disabling transmog,"
and the written recap puts those transmogrifiers in certain cities. The second is a mode selector you meet the first time you log in.Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 30:16, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Blizzard's @Warcraft account put the choice in one line the same day: "toggle off to keep that Classic feel with no mogs on anyone."Blizzard: @Warcraft on X, checked Sep 28, 2026.
The First-Login Mode Selector
The selector is "a preset of a handful of settings, any of which you can reconfigure later."
Choose Classic Mode and other players' transmog is hidden as soon as you enter the world. Blizzard's stated goal is to let you play "as if transmog does not exist at all."Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 30:27, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Every preset setting can be changed afterward, so the first screen is a starting point, not a lock. The What's Next recap lists transmog beside the modern and Classic visual presets, HD and SD character models and restored Classic animations, so a mix such as HD models with transmog off should be possible.
Armor Types, Levels and PvP Rank
One Outfit, Several Armor Types
The same-type rule stays: plate to plate, cloth to cloth. To soften it, Blizzard is "adding the ability to select different armor appearance types per slot."
For example, one saved outfit can hold both leather and mail gloves, so you're covered if you pick up an upgrade in the field that doesn't match what you wear now.Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 33:07, checked Sep 28, 2026.

The per-slot option doesn't let plate show a cloth look. It only means one outfit can keep a valid look ready for each armor type you might equip.
Level Limits and the PvP Exception
Low-level characters cannot wear high-level appearances. The developer's reason: "We want your silhouette to be relative to your level."
At max level every level restriction lifts for valid items in your collection.Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 33:30, checked Sep 28, 2026. On a new character, reaching 60 is the key to the full wardrobe, and RestedXP sells a Forever leveling route for that climb.
The main exception is gear "like PvP gear that require certain conditions to be met, such as rank."
You need the required rank to transmog that item over your equipped gear.Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 33:51, checked Sep 28, 2026. Blizzard hasn't named the ranks or the sets involved. The PvP guide covers what's announced about honor and rewards.
Why Dungeon Drops Are Shared
The developers explained the dungeon rule with one example: the Mask of the Unforgiven dropping in Stratholme, a leather helm that "looks like a bandit mask."
The question was whether a player who needs it as an upgrade should worry about someone rolling just for the look. The answer: "The short answer is no."Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 31:17, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Any bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare item that drops in a dungeon grants its appearance to all eligible looters. The developer's own case: a Rogue who needs the upgrade no longer has to worry about a Warrior rolling only for the appearance. Nobody rolls for a look, and everybody walks away with it.
Epic Items Stay With the Winner
Raids work differently because Blizzard expects groups to run organized loot, as they have for years. An epic item's appearance goes only to the player who loots and binds it, "to preserve the uniqueness and prestige of epic appearances."Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 32:16, checked Sep 28, 2026.
See the raid schedule for where that applies.
What You Keep With Transmog Off
Opting out doesn't strip your own display controls. You can still configure your own transmog to hide a helm or cloak, and other players' hidden helm and cloak choices still show for you "regardless of if either party is opted out of the system or not."Blizzard: Deep Dive stream, 34:08, checked Sep 28, 2026.
The written recap says appearances also keep collecting while the system is off, so switching on later loses nothing. Collections are shared across characters and rulesets except Hardcore, where progress flows out on transfer but outside progress cannot flow in.
Transmog in the Beta
Blizzard's beta launch post and its September 24 development notes don't mention transmogrifiers or appearance collection, as checked on Sep 28, 2026.
The October 1 notes mention collection once: "When selling to a vendor a BoE item which has an appearance you have not collected, the item will now become soulbound (was Bound to Account)."
This is a confirmed beta change; the October 1 notes summary has the full build.Blizzard: WoW Forever Beta Development Notes, October 1, checked Oct 1, 2026. The notes don't say whether transmogrifiers are in the beta, so every other rule on this page still comes from the September 13 Deep Dive and its recap.
The same three gaps remain: which cities have transmogrifiers, what a change costs, and how weapon types map to each other. The transmog toggle news report covers the original announcement and player reaction.

Transmog FAQ
If I turn transmog off, can I still hide my helm?
Yes. You can still configure your own display choices, such as hiding your helm or cloak.
Do other players see my transmog if they opted out?
No. Players with transmog disabled see your equipped gear instead of your transmog.
Can a level 10 character transmog into tier 2 raid armor?
No. Level restrictions keep it from using high-level appearances until level 60.
Can a Paladin transmog a cloth robe into plate?
No. Transmog follows item-type rules: a cloth chest must use a cloth appearance.
