What Blizzard published about HD and SD models
One sentence in the What's Next panel recap carries every first-party fact about character models in WoW Forever. Checked live on 17 September 2026, it reads:
Player choice also carries through opt-in Transmog, modern and Classic visual presets, High-Definition (HD) and Standard-Definition (SD) character-model options, restored Classic animations for HD character models, and official gamepad support for players who prefer to play with a controller.
Four things follow from it, and nothing more:
- HD and SD character models are both options.
- Modern and Classic visual presets exist alongside them.
- HD models get restored Classic animations.
- The transmog toggle sits in the same choice group.
The gameplay trailer backs the toggle with a card reading "SD/HD CHARACTER TOGGLE" at 02:07, between "ACCOUNT-WIDE PERKS" at 02:05 and "UPDATED WORLD VISUALS" at 02:10.
What the Deep Dive slide actually showed
The BlizzCon Deep Dive stream put a two-column slide on screen at roughly 00:37:00 under the heading "NEW FEATURES / TRANSMOGRIFICATION". It does not use the words "modern" or "HD preset". It names the two columns Classic and Enhanced, and lists what each one starts with.

| Setting | Classic column | Enhanced column |
|---|---|---|
| Character models | Standard Definition | High Definition |
| Quest points of interest and objective blobs | Off | On |
| One-bag | Off | On |
| Transmog | Off | On |
The slide describes Classic as "A more traditional presentation with simpler visuals, standard character models, and fewer modern interface features enabled by default" and Enhanced as "An updated presentation with higher visual fidelity and additional interface features enabled by default." Both are read off a video frame rather than a published text source, so treat the small print as legible-but-unofficial until Blizzard writes it down.
The important word on that slide is starting. Each preset sets defaults; the recap sentence keeps HD and SD as separate options you can hold either way.
Three names for one feature
The same choice has three labels across three first-party surfaces, and none of them has been reconciled:
| Surface | Wording | Status |
|---|---|---|
| What's Next recap | "modern and Classic visual presets", "High-Definition (HD) and Standard-Definition (SD) character-model options" | Confirmed |
| Deep Dive panel slide | Classic and Enhanced | Reported from a stream frame |
| Gameplay trailer card | "SD/HD CHARACTER TOGGLE" | Confirmed on screen |
The two frame readings are graded differently on purpose: the trailer card is a rendered first-party title card that reads cleanly at full size, while the panel slide is small print sampled from one timecode of a stream recording whose own metadata is unresolved. "Modern" and "Enhanced" appear to be the same preset. Blizzard has not said so. Pages that quote one wording should not silently substitute another.
World visuals are a separate change
Model fidelity is not the same as the world art pass. The recap treats the environment separately:
Rendering updates add small but powerful environmental touches—like rivers that flow through Elwynn Forest, mist over the waters of Darkshore, and moonlight breaking through the trees in Ashenvale—while preserving the timeless art style of original Azeroth.
Nothing published ties those rendering updates to the SD or HD setting, so a player on SD models has no stated reason to lose them. Our Evolving Timeless World panel report covers the art direction behind that pass.
How this connects to the transmog toggle
Transmog is bundled into the same sentence and the same preset cards, but it is a distinct switch with its own published rules: city transmogrifier NPCs, opt-out visibility, and appearance collection that continues while the display is off. The transmog system guide has the mechanics, and the optional transmog toggle announcement has Blizzard's original wording. Choosing Classic Mode at first launch disables transmog automatically — which is why the slide shows "Transmog off" in the Classic column.
What is still unknown
- Whether the HD and SD choice is per character or client-wide. The Human race page carries the same gap.
- Whether SD and HD models can be switched after character creation, and how often.
- Whether you see other players in your own model setting or theirs.
- Which races have finished HD models at launch, and whether the Skyborne have an SD version at all.
- What "restored Classic animations" restores: idle, combat, spellcast, or all three.
- Whether HD models cost more to render. The published system requirements list one spec, not one per preset.
- Whether the beta client exposes either preset on 17 September.
