Pugs in Classic ran on half-typed callouts and a lot of hope. Blizzard hasn't mentioned pings in any of its articles or recaps, so treat this as creator footage, not a feature announcement.
On September 13, 2026, content creator MrGM published gameplay footage on X that reveals the modern in-game Ping system in World of Warcraft: Forever. The 15-second video shows contextual waypoint markers and radial ping inputs placed in the Azeroth game world. This report is based on verified creator gameplay observation, not a formal first-party confirmation.

Creator Gameplay Footage: Radial Interface and Waypoint Markers Observed in Forever
MrGM's 15-second clip directly shows only two things: a radial ping menu and a waypoint marker dropped on the ground. In the footage, a player character in World of Warcraft: Forever opens the in-game ping command interface, and these are the two elements observed across the clip:
- Radial Menu Interface: Opens a contextual radial menu.
- World Waypoint Placement: Placing a ping drops a waypoint marker.
Activating the command opens the menu on screen with directional input segments. Placing a ping drops a prominent geometric waypoint marker onto the ground terrain in the 3D world.
Beyond the radial wheel and ground waypoint marker shown in the clip, other elements are inferences from modern World of Warcraft's ping wheel (Patch 10.1.7 Fury Incarnate), such as specific attack, assist, or warning markers, markers highlighting patrol routes or encounter hazards, and conclusions about the underlying client architecture.
Blizzard has not officially detailed the client architecture or published documentation confirming whether additional marker types are active.
Tactical Communication in Slower-Paced Classic Combat
Blizzard says fights in WoW Forever are slower and dungeons still call for crowd control, so players infer tactical uses for a ping wheel that works like retail's. At the BlizzCon Deep Dive Panel, Blizzard said combat in WoW Forever returns to the measured, tactical pacing of original World of Warcraft.
Blizzard expects an ordinary creature to take a solo player roughly 10 to 15 seconds to defeat, and dungeon gameplay still calls for crowd control such as Polymorph, Banish, Fear, and Root when there are too many enemies for a tank to hold.

In original Classic WoW, coordinating these mechanics meant stopping your character to type text commands, running third-party voice chat, or setting up raid target macros. If the ping wheel works like modern retail WoW's, players infer several possible tactical uses:
| Use | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pre-Pull Coordination (Inference) | Tanks and party leaders could theoretically mark targets or assign crowd control before a pull. |
| Hazard Callouts (Inference) | Players could alert group members to incoming patrols or dangerous adds without typing in chat. |
| Pacing and Movement | Waypoint ground markers give clear directions in sprawling multi-wing dungeons like Stratholme, Blackrock Depths, and Sunken Temple. |
These tactical uses remain unconfirmed inferences until Blizzard documents the full feature set for WoW Forever.
Distinguishing Creator Footage From First-Party Confirmation
MrGM's footage shows pings working in current test builds, but they may change before launch, and until Blizzard publishes specifications, treat them as observed reporting. MrGM's video is real gameplay from a working build, but it is creator observation, not official first-party confirmation:
| Source type | Detail |
|---|---|
| Creator Gameplay Observation | The footage proves the Ping system exists and works in current test builds of the WoW Forever client. |
| Absence of First-Party Documentation | None of the What's Next panel recap, the Deep Dive panel recap, the Battle.net Shop features or the official @Warcraft timeline has published written confirmation or developer commentary on the Ping system. |
Developer priorities can evolve during testing, so features seen in early creator footage may get interface adjustments, toggle restrictions, or tuning before launch. Until Blizzard publishes official system specifications, treat this feature as observed reporting.
Still Open: Toggles, Spam Throttling, and Beta Status
Blizzard hasn't said whether a Classic Mode toggle can turn pings off, how rapid pinging is limited or whether enemy players on PvP rulesets see pings; these and other implementation details remain unannounced:
| Open detail | What is known |
|---|---|
| Classic Mode Toggle | Blizzard announced an opt-out toggle for transmog to preserve the authentic visual look, but has not said whether players who prefer a traditional 2004-era interface can disable the Ping system. |
| Spam Prevention and Throttling | The cited Blizzard posts give no numeric ping rate or cooldown value. The Wowhead report below describes a brief cooldown; noise suppression and party-leader muting remain unresolved. |
| Cross-Faction and PvP Visibility | Whether enemy players on PvP rulesets can detect or hear opponent ping markers in contested territories is unannounced. Our Realmless PvP ruleset notes cover the announced ruleset. |
| Beta status | The beta opened September 17, 2026. Blizzard's beta launch post and September 24 beta development notes do not mention pings. For verified testing information, see our WoW Forever beta reference. |
How the Ping Wheel Works, per Wowhead's Forever Guide
Wowhead's Forever database now has a Ping System guide by Paryah, updated Sep 23, 2026. It is a fansite walkthrough, not a Blizzard document, so everything in this section is reported. It describes a working system with more options than MrGM's clip showed.Source: The Ping System in World of Warcraft: Forever, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Turning Pings on and Setting a Key
Enable pings in Options and bind a Ping key before you reach for the wheel. The guide's setup has two steps: first open Options, select Ping System and check Enable Pings, then open Keybindings, find the Ping System menu and bind Ping. Binding the other ping types is optional.
Tap the key to drop a default ping under your mouse. Hold it to open the radial wheel, move to a ping type and release. Ping too often in quick succession and you get a brief cooldown, which answers part of the throttling question listed above.
The Four Wheel Pings
The wheel offers Assist, Attack, Warning and On My Way, and each type has a slightly different sound. The guide expects many players will not memorize the icons and will read them as different colors, which still helps. A sound toggle and volume slider sit in the same options page.
Wowhead's Forever spell database also lists a Generic Ping, spell 1273316: instant, no cost, 40-yard range, ignores line of sight, usable while dead, mounted or stunned, and absent from the combat log.Source: Generic Ping, checked Sep 28, 2026. That is database data, not a Blizzard statement.
Ping Settings and Resource Pings
Ping Mode, Ping Target, Chat and Raid Frames
Keep Ping Mode on Quick Ping if you want the radial wheel, and use the Ping Target keybind so you stop pinging the boss by accident. Ping Mode switches between Quick Ping and Relaxed Ping; Relaxed keeps pings visible longer, but the radial wheel does not work with it.
Ping Target can be Show All (the default), Environment or Units, and a keybind toggles between Show All and Environment.
Show Pings in Chat prints pings in the chat tabs you choose, under each tab's Other settings, with a color you pick. Show Pings on Raid Frames puts a player's ping in their raid-frame cell. The guide says party frames do not get this option.
Pinging Your Health, Spells and Items
Ping your health bar and the group sees your health percentage. Ping a spell or item on your action bars or in the Cooldown Manager and it shows blue when ready, or green with the time left when on cooldown. Your own ping also puts the icon over your head and posts a chat line.
The guide says this does not read macros on your action bar and may fail with some action bar addons. If you run a replacement bar from our WoW Forever addons guide, test it before counting on it in raids.
Ping Macros
Three commands work in macros: /pingspell, /pingitem and /ping @cursor. The first two report a spell or item's status from a key press. The third drops a basic ping at your mouse, much like Quick Ping.
Ping macros are off the global cooldown, so they fire with the rest of the macro. A macro that pings and casts the same spell shows only the ready state. Wowhead says you have to press it twice to share the cooldown.
How Retail's Ping System Compares
Retail WoW added pings in Patch 10.1.7. Blizzard's PTR development notes, quoted by Wowhead in July 2023, describe holding G and left-clicking to open a wheel with Attack, Assist, Warning and On My Way.
Holding G and clicking an enemy, the ground or a unit frame sends a contextual ping.Source: Pings in Patch 10.1.7: Types and Restrictions, checked Sep 28, 2026.
Those notes list macro commands such as /ping attack and /ping onmyway. Wowhead's datamining from the same build found a spam error, "too many pings sent at once," and a raid option, Restrict Pings to Assistants. Forever's four wheel types match retail's. No Forever source mentions the assistants-only option, so whether leaders can limit pings stays open.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Ping system officially confirmed by Blizzard for WoW Forever?
Not through a formal written announcement. Creator gameplay footage from MrGM on X revealed the feature. Blizzard has not published an official news article or patch note about pings.
How does the Ping system work in WoW?
In modern World of Warcraft, the Ping system lets players send contextual alerts, such as attack targets, warnings, waypoints, and assist requests, into the 3D world. In the 15-second WoW Forever gameplay footage, only the radial menu interface and terrain waypoint markers were directly observed. Other marker types and tactical alerts remain inferences based on modern retail behavior.
Can the Ping system be disabled for an authentic Classic experience?
Whether an interface option will let you disable incoming or outgoing pings is still open. The game does include a Classic Mode toggle for other modernized systems like transmog.
Are pings in the WoW Forever beta?
Blizzard's beta posts do not mention pings. MrGM posted his clip on September 13, four days before the beta opened.
