Raid progress in Classic was something you read off a player's shoulders, and the transmog toggle keeps that possible. Picking Classic Mode at first launch switches it off for you, and low-level characters can't show high-level looks until level 60.
Blizzard's verified @Warcraft account announced on September 13, 2026 that "Optional transmog means maximum choice and flexibility,"
confirming that players can "Toggle on to equip your dream fit and see other mogs, or toggle off to keep that Classic feel with no mogs on anyone."

Blizzard's Deep Dive Panel Recap that followed lays out the complete system in World of Warcraft: Forever, including city transmogrifier NPCs, transmog switched off by default in Classic Mode, shared dungeon appearance unlocks, and strict armor-type and level-60 restrictions. For the systems background, see our WoW Forever Transmog guide.

How the Transmog Toggle Controls Player Visibility
With the toggle on, you can wear transmogrified outfits and see other players' transmog; with it off, you see everyone in their actual equipped gear. You switch it at a transmogrifier NPC in certain cities, and your character keeps collecting appearances while it is off.
The announcement resolves one of the central gameplay questions raised when Blizzard first introduced "opt-in Transmog"
during the BlizzCon What's Next panel.Blizzard: World of Warcraft: Forever What's Next Panel Recap, checked Sep 13, 2026. In modern World of Warcraft, transmogrified appearances are globally visible across all clients in the game world.
In WoW Forever, Blizzard has introduced a client-level visibility toggle designed to balance modern personal customization with Classic visual authenticity:
- Toggled on: Equip custom transmogrified outfits; see others' appearances.
- Toggled off: Everyone appears in actual equipped gear.
Toggled on, players can equip custom transmogrified outfits and view transmogrified appearances displayed by other adventurers in the shared world. Toggled off, players view the world in its unaltered state, seeing all characters around them strictly in their actual equipped gear.
The same panel line that introduced opt-in transmog also introduced the HD and SD character-model options, and the Classic preset turns both transmog and high-definition models off together.
Blizzard confirmed that you set up outfits, or disable the system entirely, at a transmogrifier NPC in certain cities. Blizzard also confirmed that picking Classic Mode when first launching the game disables transmog automatically when your character enters Azeroth.

Opting out only changes what your own client displays. Even while the transmog system is disabled, your character keeps unlocking and collecting appearances from newly acquired gear in the background. If you later visit a city transmogrifier and enable the system, your full accumulated appearance library is available.
Dungeon Loot Sharing and Raid Appearance Rules
Bind-on-pickup green and blue dungeon drops give their appearance to every eligible looter, so party members won't roll against your upgrade just to unlock its look. Raid epics unlock only for the player the item binds to, and gray and white items unlock as soon as you loot them.
Blizzard set separate rules for how you get appearances from dungeon, raid, and world item tiers to keep appearance collecting from distorting dungeon groups:
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shared dungeon drops | If a bind-on-pickup (BoP) Uncommon (green) or Rare (blue) item drops in a dungeon, its appearance is automatically granted to all eligible looters when the item is looted. This design ensures that a player who needs an item as an immediate combat upgrade will not have party members rolling against them solely to unlock its appearance. |
| Prestige-bound raid epics | For epic raid drops, appearances are granted on acquisition only to the specific player the item binds to. This preserves the prestige of high-end raid progression, leaving loot distribution and appearance ownership in the hands of organized guild and raid groups. |
| Unbound poor and common gear | Items of Poor (gray) or Common (white) quality grant their appearance as soon as they are looted, without requiring the item to bind to the character. Blizzard says this lets lower-level or unbound appearances be shared more flexibly. |

Armor Restrictions and the Level-60 Unlock Threshold
Your armor can only take appearances of its own armor type, and high-level appearances stay locked until your character reaches level 60, apart from rare cosmetic-only items. Transmogrification in WoW Forever holds to traditional Classic armor identities rather than the relaxed modern cosmetic rules:
| Restriction | Detail |
|---|---|
| Armor-type matching | Outfits must match the armor class of the equipped item. Plate armor only transmogrifies into plate appearances, mail into mail, leather into leather, and cloth into cloth. Blizzard noted a specific example: a Paladin wearing a cloth chestpiece, such as Robes of the Exalted, must transmogrify that item into another cloth chest appearance rather than plate armor. |
| Level restrictions during leveling | Characters on the route from level 1 to 60 cannot apply high-level armor or weapon appearances before 60. High-tier dungeon and raid appearances remain locked until a character reaches level 60, at which point level restrictions are removed for all valid appearances in the player's collection. |
| Cosmetic-only items | True cosmetic-only items serve as the lone exception to level limitations, though Blizzard explicitly cautioned that cosmetic-only items will remain rare throughout WoW Forever. |
| Independent slot display | Disabling the system does not prevent a player from hiding specific slots, such as their helm or cloak, or displaying a particular look without enabling full transmog. Crucially, players who operate with transmog disabled will still see other players' hidden helm and cloak settings, preserving the original World of Warcraft behavior. |

Distinguishing Official Facts From Community Debate
Only the mechanics in Blizzard's first-party posts and panel recap are verified rules; the community posts on X and Reddit are debate. Transmogrification has historically split Classic WoW players, and purists argue that silhouettes and recognizable gear progression define open-world PvP and social prestige.
Following the announcement, community discussions on X and Reddit focused on how the opt-out toggle answers those concerns:
- EnderPandaPlayz answered "this is just retail" complaints.
EnderPandaPlayz pointed out that the feature is optional and can be turned off for everyone around you.
Community sentiment shows plenty of attention on visual options, but only the mechanics published in Blizzard's first-party posts and panel recap are verified facts. Blizzard's toggle description covers transmogrified appearances only; character models have separate HD and SD options.
What Blizzard Has Not yet Published
Transmog costs, the full list of transmogrifier cities and cross-type weapon transmog are unannounced, and Blizzard's beta launch post and September 24 beta development notes don't mention transmogrifiers. Several questions about how transmogrification works remain open:
| Open question | What is known |
|---|---|
| Gold and currency costs | Whether applying transmogrifications costs vendor gold, consumes profession materials, or scales with item level. |
| Transmogrifier locations | While Blizzard stated that transmogrifiers reside in "certain cities,"the exact list of capital cities hosting transmogrifier NPCs has not been released.Blizzard: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap, checked Sep 13, 2026. |
| Weapon cross-transmogrification | Blizzard has not clarified whether weapon transmogrification allows cross-type customization within the same weapon handedness (e.g. transmogrifying a one-handed sword into a one-handed axe or mace). |
| Beta status | The beta opened September 17, 2026. Blizzard's beta launch post and September 24 beta development notes do not mention transmogrifiers or appearance collection. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you turn off transmog in WoW Forever?
Yes. Blizzard's September 13 announcement confirms that players can toggle transmog off. With it off, you see all other adventurers in their actual equipped gear instead of transmogrified appearances.
Where do you configure or disable transmog?
According to Blizzard's Deep Dive Panel Recap, players visit a transmogrifier NPC in certain cities to build transmogrified outfits or disable the system entirely.
Will players roll Need on dungeon drops just for transmog?
No. In dungeons, bind-on-pickup Uncommon and Rare drops grant their appearance to all eligible looters as soon as the item is looted, so appearance collectors and players who need the equipment upgrade don't compete for it.
Can low-level characters use high-level transmog appearances?
No. Low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances during the leveling journey. The level restrictions stay active until your character reaches level 60, when all valid appearances in your collection become usable.
What happens if a Paladin wears cloth gear?
Transmogrification sticks strictly to item armor types. If a Paladin equips a cloth chestpiece, that item can only be transmogrified into another cloth appearance, not a plate appearance.
